FreeAPI.Watch – Live status of 77 free public APIs

FreeAPI.watch is a live-monitored, curated directory of free public APIs for developers and AI engineers.

The problem it solves: the popular “public-apis” GitHub list (~350k stars) is fantastic for discovery but tells you nothing about which APIs actually work today. Roughly a third of entries are dead, gone paid, or have changed free-tier terms — and you can’t tell until you’ve spent 20 minutes integrating one that no longer works.

FreeAPI.watch fixes this with hourly automated checks. A Cloudflare Worker pings 77 carefully curated APIs across 5 categories (weather, news, finance, geocoding, cryptocurrency) every hour and writes uptime + response time to a SQLite database. The static site rebuilds daily with the freshest data.

Each tracked API has its own page showing current status, 30-day uptime percentage, real free-tier description (no credit card scores higher than card-required), authentication type, and live-ranked alternatives in the same category. A composite scoring formula (60% uptime + 30% normalized response time + 10% free-tier accessibility) ranks APIs in each category objectively — no paid placement.

A “graveyard” page documents famous APIs that died or moved to paid (Twitter v1.1, Dark Sky, Yahoo Finance, MetaWeather, Reddit’s free tier, Weather Underground) with replacement suggestions for each.

For builders integrating multiple APIs into AI agents, RAG pipelines, or automation workflows: the data is also exposed as a public JSON API at /api/v1/ — no auth required, 5-minute edge cache. Hand-curated by one developer, hosted entirely on free tiers, $0/month to run.
